Day 359: Do you have a Creative Buddy?

I don't mean just any old friend, I mean a conscience.

Now that I've pretty much finished my Uni Degree I know I'm going to find it hard to carry on with Holly's story. I don't have that weekly deadline any more where I go into class and get comments on my work. If I don't write, who will know? It doesn't matter if I miss a week, right?

WRONG, I'll never get it finished if that's my attitude!

When I spoke to my teacher about it she suggested a writing buddy. I have to email them each week and tell them how many words I've written. If I don't do it, they send me an angry email back, telling me off. It's best if I'm a bit scared of the person too, so best not to be a friend! Keep it professional. Writing buddies works both ways. I become their conscience too and shout at them if they're not keep up their creative work. Fun, huh!

a lack of creative drive can be found in all creative folk at some point. We all need a kick up the bum sometimes to get moving, so why not find your own creative buddy? Someone to be YOUR conscience. You owe it to the world to share your unique creativity with it, so keep up the good work. Get a buddy.

Day 331: Sharing Harry Potter

I was flicking through the channels on the TV as I eating my lunch and finally settled on a show about book clubs. The programme went from a studio of presenters to an idyllic country house where 8 people were sitting around discussing a book they'd all read. They shared ideas and opinions on the book and looked like they were having a pretty good time.

There's something about sharing the experience of reading a book. When Harry Potter: The Deathly Hallows came out, I remember my sister and I read it together. Sometimes we would read it aloud to each other and sometimes we'd read independently at the same time. It was really nice being able to finish a chapter and then talk about it with someone else.

Making reading into a social activity seems like a really good idea to me and watching this programme made me want to join a book club. Everyone who reads a book takes slightly different meanings from it, based on their own experiences of the subject matter and where they're at in their life, so sharing reading gives you a bigger picture of what that book is about.

I've made the decision. After Uni (everything is after uni at the moment!) I am going to set up a book club. Are you with me? Why not set one up yourself with your friends, at your school/collage or at work? Try teenreads to start you off on your way or contact your local library to see what's already going on in your area.

Reading doesn't have to be done alone...

Day 288: Rhianna, U2 and Justin Bieber sing to help Japan

These three musical phenomenons are just some of the artists clubbing together to make a digital album to raise money for those struggling in the Japan tragedy.

Big music label, Universal Music are putting it together and hope to have it out for the world to purchase by the end of the week, so keep your eyes peeled.

What a great way to use your creativity to help others. It got me thinking; what could us creative thinkers do to help?

Obviously these artists have fame on their side. If I made an album to help Japan, I don't think it would be as successful, but the point is, we are all creative and if we did our bit, then it will definitely help, even if only a little bit.

What are you good at? What are your friends good at? Could you club together to make a difference? Think about other people/organisations you could include. Maybe your school/college/work?

What better way to put your creativity to good use than help support those struggling across the world? Put your creative thinking caps on folks and let's see how we can help.

Day 248: Just Volunteer

Goodness knows why today's entry is brought to you at 6:25 in the morning! I have been awake since 4:15 and thought, after two hours of rolling around in my bed, it was time to get up.

The truth is, I'm worried. I'm worried about life after I graduate and what anyone creative can possibly do for the world in a time of resession. No one's hiring, no one wants to invest in creativity and I just don't know what to do with all my creative enthusiasm.

But, after two hours of thinking, I have come to this conclusion. Us creative folk just need to volunteer for a while.

Last year I went into two secondary schools to teach creative writing (for free) and I loved it. In the summer I volunteered with the Bath Kids Lit Fest and loved it. This year I am volunteering with Bath Festival's educational department and, yet again, am loving it! It's amazing what people will let you do when you'll do it for free.

All of this stuff looks pretty good on my CV and so, I'm hoping that one day it'll get me a job I really enjoy too, but until then, I'm gonna keep on doing stuff for free. Life's too short to get caught up in making money.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you enjoy being creative, then just do it. Get involved and see where it takes you. What do you enjoy doing? What's going on in your area? Could you get stuck in? Doing stuff for free in a time of global resession is what's gonna make the world keep turning I reckon! I'm telling you, it's the way forward...

Day 236 & 237: Oops, I did it again!

Ok, so today there is no excuses. I forgot. I actually completely failed to remember to write my blog yesterday. In fact, it wasn't until about 5 minutes ago that I actually realised I hadn't done it! You'd think after doing something every day for 235 days, I wouldn't forget, but I did. So there you have it. Can I put it down to being a scatty creative person? Will you let me??

To make up for my failings, I will brighten your day with not one, but two entries (lucky you, eh?)

It seems only right to talk about when creativity goes 'wrong'. What do you do when something you're working on isn't going how you want? What if someone else doesn't like it or it's just really hard? Do you give up? Should you give up?

You might be thinking I've brought all this up because I forgot to write yesterday. Well, partly, but I also got my marks back (on Friday) for the open chapters of my novel I'm doing for my final year. They were ok, but not what I wanted. I don't know about you, but I find it really hard to pick myself back up when I get bad grades. My story is a part of me and someone marked it. It's only natural that I feel down about it.

BUT, it's what I do next that's important. Do I keep going, working my butt off to make it as good as Emma Fowler can, or do I put minimal effort in, concentrate on my other projects and resign my story to failure?

I think you know which one I'm going to (try) and pick.

Creativity is a personal thing, but most of us do it to share. I don't know about you, but I don't want to keep it to myself. I do it for others as much as I do it for myself. Not everyone will like it, but some people will. And I'm still learning, you know. I often expect too much of myself. Quite clearly I'm not going to be perfect at writing a novel. I've never done it before!

So, I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't give up. If you're creative, then it's a part of you too and it aint gonna go away! So keep going and enjoy it!

(Stay tuned for another exciting entry on Creative Thinkers!)

Day 234: Creativity and the bean stork

Are there some things that are more important to you than others? Do you think some lessons at school/college are more worth while?

I find that it doesn't matter how much work I've done for Uni each day, if I haven't written anything for my novel, I don't feel like I've achieved anything. I could have done loads of reading, planned for my competition project, sent a million emails...if I haven't done any creative writing then, in my head, I've done nothing.

Do you ever get like that?

Sometimes, I'll get to the end of the day feeling a bit rubbish about my 'achievements', then I'll do half an hour of knitting (or something else creative that I love) and everything's fine again.

What does this say about my priorities? What does it say about what matters to me? What does it say about my creativity?

It's weird isn't it? Do non-creative people get this? Please don't tell me I'm the only one!

After a bit of thinking, I've come to the decision that creative things I do, like knitting and writing, grow. I can see the change I've made. There are more words in that story, the characters are more developed...the dinosaur I'm knitting  has a longer neck (yep, I'm doing it...see Day 213).

So yeah, it's in the word...to be creative is to create. Why wouldn't you love it?

Day 229: Do you believe in your own creativity?

Sometimes I look at the world and think, how am I ever going to get anywhere with my creative skills? Does the world really need them? Do it even want them?

Even my some of my teacher tell me, 'it's so hard to break the industry. Most of you won't ever make it...'

Encouraging stuff, huh?

Well, this is the decision I've come to this morning because of an amazing teacher called Janine. In my lesson yesterday (and in many of lessons actually) she claimed our writing was better than an author that just one a prize for their book. She always says things like, 'when you get published' or 'when you send yours off to publishers.' She believes in us and the more you're told you can do it, the more you believe it. It gives you the motivation to carry on and believe that what you've got can make a difference.

So, what are you doing? If you believe in yourself and your creative abilities, you can do it! I'm here to say that creativity is important. It doesn't matter what the government says. It doesn't matter what our maths teacher says. Creativity is part of everyone and we got given an extra dose, so share it!

I wouldn't be writing this blog everyday if I didn't believe in creativity. So get out there and show the world what you got. If you think it's important, then it is! No one can do creativity like you can. You are unique and the world needs you.

Are you with me?

Day 228: Are you an inspiration catcher?

Do you ever wake up in the night with loads of ideas for your creative projects? Or just as you fall to sleep you get a really good idea, but you're too tired to write it down? Or maybe you wake up in the morning with fresh ideas on how to carry on...

Creativity in a part of me all the time and it never really stops working, but the trouble is I've got a rubbish memory!

The other day I had a really good idea about a conversation my two character could have, but I didn't write it down and now it's completely gone. No idea. Can't remember.

But, I'm telling you this safe in the knowledge that I learnt from my mistake (for once). This morning I woke up after having a horrible dream about being bitten by a freaky looking cat (which is weird, 'cause I really like cats.) Anyway, I suddenly had loads of ideas for my story (no thanks to the cat), so I got up and started writing. That was at 8:30 this morning and three hours later I've got 1000 words to show for it. (Imagine me with a smug smile right now!)

I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you have a flash of inspiration, don't waste it. Write it down, even if it's just notes and then get on with it. It's amazing how quickly your motivation can leave you, so catch the inspiration while you can.

I'm pretty sure you'll feel way better after.

Happy creating!

Day 226: Colaborative Creativity

Us creative types need to stick together, especially in times like these where the government seem to be squashing all the we love out of their national budgets. Perhaps with a bit of team work, we can make what we do stronger and get our talents noticed...

This year is my last year at uni, which means I get to do loads of cool creative stuff exactly the way I want to (woop)! As you might already know, I'm running a writing competition in a local school, making an anthology out of the entries and selling it for charity. I'm pretty excited about it, but, to be honest, I know very little about actually making an anthology. I can't do design and I don't know a thing about layout. That's where collaboration comes in. My friend Fleur is a graphic design student in her final year, so she gets to pick cool creative stuff too. To cut a long story short she's designing the layout for my anthology. She gets experience in her creative field and I get an amazing anthology. Both of us win!

Plus, another girl I met called Laura is dramatising a scene from my novel for her final year Film and Media project. She gets a project, I get a video to promote my story. All are winners! (Watch this space for video excitement!)

So there you go, proof that creative collaboration works and is really exciting.

Who do you know that's creative? Could you work together to help each other out and make both your work more exciting? ALL creativity works well together. You just need a little creative thinking to get it going...

Day 225: Should you put kisses in text?

So, I know this isn't directly related, but bare with me...

Me and my housemates were just having a chat about whether you should send 'x's (kisses) in texts. One of them said, 'well, if I text a boy I don't send kisses.' But I totally do. Am I giving them the wrong impression...?

For me it's kind of a signing off. I don't want to waste characters on writing, 'love/from Emma.' That's 8 characters, when I can just use one, 'x'. Everyone gets one kiss from my boyfriend to a work colleague.

The other day I had a convo with my sister who said, 'I only send you one kiss 'cause you only send me one. I send Grania (her best friend) three.' Cheek! Does that mean she 'loves' Grania more than me...?

I'm pretty sure this kind of confusion about texting politics is not new to you either. Don't you think it'd be better if everyone did the same thing? What we need is a code.

So, this is my creative proposal for today. I need someone to write a book about 'text eticate' and publish it everywhere. Only then will we find rest with this heated topic!

Whose with me? Whose up for the challenge? The world needs your creative input...

Day 219: Matthew Bourne's Cinderella

This morning I ate my breakfast whilst watching BBC Breakfast and was introduced to Matthew Bourne. I'd never heard heard of him before, but as a creative blogger, I thought, what better person to inspire you all to get creative.

Matthew Bourne is a dance choreographer and has directed shows such as Swan Lake, Edward Scissorhands and Dorian Grey. His production of Swan Lake in particular was by no means ordinary. His use of Male dancers as the swans brought much controversy to his ballet, but with that comes interest. Mr Bourne, it would appear, is all about bringing in the new.

To add to his varied collection, currently showing in London is his latest creation, Cinderella. There's a twist (of course) to this classic fairytale. It's set in London during the Blitz (Wartime England). Take a peek at this brooding, atmospheric ballet below. I don't know about you, but it certainly makes me want to crack out a ballet step or two (and that's from someone who hasn't done ballet since the age of 5!)

Bourne didn't start training as a dancer until he was 22, which is pretty late in dance. I guess that means there's hope for all of us. It's never too late to start working toward your creative passion. Now possibly the most popular choreographer in Britain, Matthew Bourne is entertaining people all over the world with his creative skills. What an inspiration!

And...to add another sprinkle of inspiration, you can get involved with his Rebourne workshops! Check out New Adventures, his company for loads more cool stuff he's got going on.

Cinderella is on at London Sadler's Wells Dance House until 23rd January and then goes on tour around Britain. See here for more details. even if dance isn't your thing, check out this amazing man's creations and get inspired to do your creative thing, your way...

Day 217: Wooly Winters

Good News Folks! I found out from BBC this morning that wool is on the up. More people are buying knitted stuff. More people are knitting. Which means, British wool is making money for our country, yay!

You wanna know why I'm banging on about this, don't you?

Well, the truth is guys, knitting is cool! Creating your own bags, clothes, toys...is the way forward.

So get out there and start creating. There's never been a better time to support our country's economy. Plus, it's real good for the environment too. Hardly any fossil fuels needs to be used to produce yarn and British wool is being sold all over the world.

If you need an excuse to get creative with wool, here it is. No more excuses people. It's time to be inspired by sheep!

Day 215: How do we improve out creativity?

I have spent the morning reading through a story written by a friend of mine. Unfortunately, I can't tell you anything about this story 'cause it's not mine to tell. So, why mention it?

As I was reading through, I kept thinking about all the writing I should be doing, rather than reading someone else's. It's not going to get me anywhere helping them out, so why am I spending all this time doing it...?

Well, the truth is, none of that is true. Reading other people's work really does help me. If I can see how they can improve their work, I am also learning to improve my own. Take dialogue, for example. Does the old man's dialogue sound like an old man? Does the old man sound different to the little girl? If they don't then, it's not convincing dialogue...

...Now, when I right my dialogue, it'll be better. If you're a writer, reading and editing is learning.

What is your creative thing you do? How do you learn about it? How do you get better? Could helping others along, help yourself along too?

Something to think about...

Day 214: Jessie J

Jessie J, who's Jessie J?

Well, she's the winner of, BBC Sound of 2011. As far as the BBC are concerned, she's gonna be big in Music this year.

So, what's she done?

She's been writing music for ages. Songs sung by Alisha Keys, Miley Cyrus and even Justin Timberlake were written by her, so she's been behind the scenes for a while and she's only 22! Now she's writing songs for herself. What an inspiration! She's someone who's made her way up the ladder of the music industry. Check out this video to see her performing her new song, Price Tag.

Day 213: Creative Dinosaur Mission!

Today I am leaving my home to go back to Uni and it always makes me sad. There's going to be a lot of work to do this term and, to be honest, I just can't be bothered right now. All I want to do is knit and play on the Wii with my sisters (and eat chocolate!)

But I guess the truth is, they all have to go back to reality too. Even if I stayed here, they wouldn't be able to sit around with me all day. They have to go to work and school...and I have to go graduate : )

So, I think the best thing to do is have a creative plan, you know, to make it easier to go back. As of this moment I've decided my creative mission over the next term is to make something like this:

That way, I've got loads of time to do it and at the end of the term, I'll have something creative to show (besides the creative writing I do for my course.)

Why not give yourself a creative mission, something that's separate to what you do every day. Have a think. What do you want to do? Set yourself and deadline and swing it into action!

Day 211: Pizza Express Winner!

This is a charming picture of my sister, eating the winning pizza from the Pizza Express Competition which I talked about on Day 66. People had the chance to submit their ideal pizza topping and now the winning topping is on the menu!

Did you enter? Have you tried the new pizza? Well, someone won, which just goes to show, you need to be in it to win it!

It's inspired me to get involved in a competition. Let's do it together. We need to get our creativity out there! So, find a competition and enter it (preferably creative, but anything really).

Goodnight and Good Luck!

Day 176: Baby bootie!

As you may know, the creative adventure I'm having at the moment (other than creative writing) is knitting. I thought it was about time I shared with you my achievement. Behold, the (single) baby bootie...

Isn't it cute? (get the pattern here.)When I finished it, I was so proud of myself. I love it when you try something new and you actually do something with it. Ok, so I've only made one, but I'm half way there, so wahoo!

What are you doing creatively at the moment? Is it time to start something new and exciting? Is it time to get on with what you are doing, step it up a notch?

Wherever you are, I hope my little baby bootie encourages you in your creative adventure. If I can do it, then so can you!

Go...

Day 171: Nick Horby

Nick Hornby is a world famous writer. He's written, amongst others, Fever Pitch and About a boy. Both of these have been made into films too, so I'd say he's up there with the greats!

As a creative person whose in the lime light, Nick Hornby is going into schools in London to help pupils with their literacy skills and encouraging them to love reading and writing, just like he does. I don't know if you've watched the news recently, but the government aren't happy with spelling, grammar etc, so Nick Hornby and some other writers have decided to do something about it.

For Nick Hornby, the most important thing in the project is, 'humour, intrigue and creativity.' You can find out more about his project here.

Nick Hornby is taking his creative skills and using them to create change. How great is that!

I don't know about you, but this really inspires me to use my skills to help people too. Creative skills are just as important as maths or science. People love to get creative in lots of different ways and it makes people happy!

What creative skills do you enjoy using? Nick Hornby obviously enjoys creating stories, so that's what he's using to help people.

What do you care about? Nick Hornby obviously cares about reading and writing, so that's what he's focusing on, using his skills to do it.

What could you do with what your skills...?

Day 170: Making Music

I feel like I haven't written about music for a while, so I searched the web and found this. It's called Making Music and it does exactly what it says on the tin!

If you are looking for musical things going on, then see what they've got to offer you.Whether it's singing, learning instruments or getting involved with like-minded musicians...they can help you out and find you a place. Click here to search in your area. You can even add events yourself!

There's also stuff about the Cultural Olympiad. There are loads of creative things going on in the lead up to the Olympics 2012. They want everyone to get involved, so if music is your thing, check out what you can do to get in on the action. I'll keep you posted on other Olympics related creative things for you to get stuck into...watch this space!

So, be inspired and get musical...

Monday, 22 November 2010

Day 168: Joshua Bell on the subway in N.Y.

Joshua Bell is a world famous violinist. He composes music and has performed all over the world. He's also done movie soundtracks and even been on Sesame Street!

But at 7.51am on 12th January, he played for 45 minutes on the New York Subway. Wanna know how much he made for his world famous playing as a busker? $32! Over 1000 people past him and how many do you think stopped to listen, watch, admire?

Watch this video to see what happened:

Isn't it crazy to think someone as creatively talented as Joshua Bell was ignored on the Tube? How do you react to busker? I know I would probably do exactly the same thing as they all did, but why?

This all got me thinking about being creative...Do I, as a creative person, support the creative work of others? Surely we need to stick together, right?

The other day I told you I went to an open mic-night, which was heaps of fun and gave me loads of inspiration and momentum for my own creative work, so it would seem that supporting each other helps us along too (creatively speaking). Maybe it's time we became more active in our support of creative thinkers!

What's going on in your area, at your school/college, or even out on the streets? How could you support them? I don't mean with money necessarily, but what could you do to encourage those who are doing similar things to you? Could you do more? Maybe you could make a pact...I'll go to yours if you come to mine...?

Something to think about...
